You have all heard the story about the legendary Odysseus, king of Ithaca. He is probably the best known hero in Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey. Legend goes that it took Odysseus twenty years to return to Ithaca – ten fighting the Trojan War and another ten for the journey back home. During all these years, his wife Penelope stayed faithful until they finally reunited. Odysseus reasserted his place as the rightful king of Ithaca after all the years of travails trying to return home.

This is how Odysseus described Ithaca:

I am Odysseus, son of Laertes, known to the world
for every kind of craft – my fame has reached the skies.
Sunny Ithaca is my home. Atop her stands our seamark,
Mount Neriton’s leafy ridges shimmering in the wind.
Around her a ring of islands circle side-by-side,
Doulichion, Same, wooded Zacynthos too, but mine
lies low and away, the farthest out to sea,
rearing into the western dusk
while the others face the east and breaking day.

(Odyssey book IX, trans. Robert Fagles)

This epic poem strikes a chord in me. Home is worth fighting for and worth returning to, home is special.

Unfortunately earthquakes destroyed everything on the island. Today I take you to present day Ithaca, because every epic journey is worth blogging about : )

Hi. Great photos. I can recognise all the places in Ithaka! We have sailed there many times on our yacht Fandancer. She is currently out of the water in Preveza near Lefkas, and I can’t wait until we return to her in April and carry on our voyage around the Greek islands. I’ll start my sailing blog properly then, too. Good luck with your travels and I’m looking forward to reading more.
